Man Arrested
After Hit & Run |
|
July
24, 2010 - Norton, MA - On Thursday, July 22, at
approximately 6:37pm, Norton Police and Fire Departments
received several 911 calls reporting a hit and run accident on
Mansfield Avenue at Emma's Pub. Callers stated that a red
pick-up truck had left the parking lot at Emma's Pub and struck
a gray Honda Odyssey before fleeing the scene, headed south on
Mansfield Avenue. No injuries were reported at the scene. |
|
While in route to the
scene, the Norton Communications Center received several more
calls reporting a motor vehicle accident at 27 Reservoir Street.
When police arrived on scene at Reservoir Street, they
discovered the damaged vehicle was the truck that fled the scene
on Mansfield Avenue. The truck drove off the road at 27
Reservoir Street, struck a tree and a utility pole, and came to
rest on the driver's side door. The operator, Joseph
Peltier, 22, of 2 Colonial Lane, Canton, appeared to have head
injuries. The truck forced large rocks into the roadway, which
caused Reservoir Street to be closed for a short time. |

|
|
While Norton Police
were at the scene on Reservoir Street, Mansfield Police and
State Police responded to the scene at Emma's. A Norton
Fire engine left the scene on Reservoir Street and responded to
Mansfield Avenue to control fluid leaks from the damaged
vehicle. Peltier was transported to Rhode Island Hospital
via the Norton Rescue. Norton Police responded to the scene on
Mansfield Avenue to conduct the investigation. None of the
passengers of the Honda Odyssey were injured.
Peltier was charged
with Operating a Motor Vehicle while Under the Influence of
Alcohol, Operating a Motor Vehicle Recklessly so as to Endanger,
Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident after Causing
Property Damage, and Marked Lanes Violation. |

Tai
Chi at the Norton Library
Something different is being offered in the Norton Public
Library Park in celebration of this summer’s theme, "Go
Green at Your Library." Sign up for classes on Monday July 26 at 1:30 for an introduction
to the ancient Chinese exercise Tai Chi/Qi Gong taught by Peggy
Leung, R.N., of Braintree.
This ancient health and fitness discipline offers many
benefits including stress reduction, emotional wellness,
improved strength, flexibility, balance and postural alignment.
It is good for any age or ability level.
Hopefully, it will be a perfect day for this outside
activity. If not, students will meet inside the library in the
Community Room. Everyone is welcome – any age, any condition,
and any profession. You may sign up for one or both sessions at
the library or call 508-286-2695 to register. It is simple and
fun. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Norton Public
Library.
"Book
Cooks" Program
"Go Green at Your Library" is in full swing at the
Norton Public Library, but there is more to come in August. The
library will again offer a "Book Cooks" program to the
first 25 adults to register. This program requires a $10.00
materials fee to be paid upon registration; the majority of
funding comes from a Norton Cultural Council grant and a
donation from the Friends of the Norton Public Library. Daggett-Crandall-Newcomb
Home on Newland Street in Norton has once again offered their
facility for cooking and dining. Their chef, Anna Biron, will
guide participants in the preparation of a feast focusing on
locally grown and harvested produce, as well as a sampling of
locally produced cheese and seafood. "Locavores" will
be provided with maps to guide them in their own search to savor
Massachusetts for more than its rich history.
As this program is limited, come in today to register for
"Book Cooks – Close to Home" on Thursday evening,
August 5th at 6:15 PM at the Daggett-Crandall-Newcomb
Home.
Chef Anna Biron’s program is based on the concepts found in
the book, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: a year of food life by
Barbara Kingsolver. Join in the discussion of this book led by
Chris Cormier Hayes on Tuesday afternoon, August 10th
at 2:00. Local refreshments will be served. Registration is
required. This program is funded by the Friends of the Norton
Public Library.

Norton
High to Hold 2010 All-Night Graduation Party for Seniors |
|
NORTON
– Plans for Norton High School’s 8th Annual All-Night
Graduation Party are under way. The Norton High School
Parent Advisory Board, along with the Norton Community Task
Force, have been working hard to organize this event, to be held
on Friday, June 4, 2010 for all graduating members of the
Norton High School Class of 2010.
This
celebration is open to all graduating seniors of
Norton High and is a fun-filled, safe and festive occasion that
will truly cap off their high school memories. The Attleboro
YMCA generously allows use of their facility, hosting the event
from 11:00 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. on graduation night, June 4, 2010.
During the evening, there will be many activities taking place
– an all-night DJ, karaoke, "reality game show, dancing,
swimming, inflatables, a hypnotist, money-free casino, henna
tattoo artist, to name a few! In addition, there will be a huge
variety of food, snacks and refreshments and each senior will
receive a special "memento" of the evening. |
|

|
Seniors
are not charged any fees for this special event; however the
only thing we ask them is once they arrive, they stay until
the evening is over. This will ensure a memorable, but safe
graduation night for our seniors. Parents can feel secure that
their son/daughter is celebrating in a protected environment
with no driving, drinking or drugs. It’s a giant party that
includes swimming, dancing, games, free entertainment, free
food, and free prizes. |
|
As
you can imagine, an event of this nature requires funding and
volunteer time to make it all come together. This is where we
need your help. If you would like to make a donation to help
support the 2010 NHS Grad Night Party, please send your check to
(payable to Norton High Grad Night) to Norton High
School, 66 West Main Street, Norton, MA, 02766, Attention: NHS
Parent Advisory Board.
The
NHS Parent Advisory Board and Norton Community Task Force
welcome, and greatly appreciate, all donations whether they are
monetary, or of time, products, or service. For more information
on how you can be a part of this community effort, please call

Disaster
Officials Offer Tips to Speed Assistance |
|
BOSTON – Disaster recovery
officials urge residents and businesses dealing with severe
storm damage and loss to adopt a take-charge action plan to
help speed the possibility of obtaining state and federal
disaster aid:
Register
Now:
Don’t
wait. Homeowners, renters and business owners who suffered
disaster-related damage or loss should call the Federal
Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) registration line at
800-621-FEMA (3362) or 800-462-7585 for the hearing- or speech
impaired. Online registration is available at www.DisasterAssistance.gov.
Multilingual operators are available.
Register,
even if you are insured. Your insurance coverage may not be
adequate and some foundation damage may not appear until
later. Anyone who suffered any damage or loss should register
for assistance.
Disaster
assistance covers a wide range of losses. Structural damage or
repair is covered, as is damage or loss of essential personal
property, such as a major appliance or medical equipment
(wheelchairs, etc).
After Registering:
Keep
critical appointments. A FEMA-contracted inspector will make
an appointment to visit your home, usually within a week. Make
every effort to be at home or you can authorize an agent to be
present. Use the Helpline option at the FEMA registration
toll-free numbers for contact updates, including your
agent’s name, a new phone number, or to change appointment
times.
Return
all forms promptly. After registering, you may receive a U.S.
Small Business Administration (SBA) disaster loan application
package in the mail. Fill out and return these forms promptly
since they are an essential part of the disaster-assistance
process.
Stay
in touch. Use the Helpline for answers to your questions about
federal assistance, the same number you called to register for
aid.
Have
realistic expectations. You should not expect disaster
assistance to restore you to pre-disaster conditions. It is
intended to help you get safe and sanitary housing and meet
other critical needs so you can begin your long-term recovery.
Read
all FEMA letters and documents. Applicants deemed eligible for
disaster assistance will receive a letter from FEMA providing
guidance on their disaster relief grant. It will tell you
about ways the money can be spent in your recovery. Be advised
that federal assistance may have to be repaid if it is
duplicated by insurance or other assistance received.
Talk
to FEMA if you have questions, especially about insurance. If
you receive a FEMA letter saying your application has been
denied, it often means that one or more aspects of your
application require further information or correction. An
“INS-Insured” denial does not necessarily mean “case
closed,” it means you must first settle with your insurer to
prevent any duplication of payments.
Keep
FEMA in mind after your insurance settlement. You may have
been underinsured and some uncompensated losses may be
eligible for some form of disaster aid. Call the Helpline if
your insurance settlement is delayed, if it does not cover all
of your loss, if you can’t find rental housing in your area,
or if your additional living expense benefits are exhausted.
Remember, failure to file a claim with your insurer within 12
months can affect your eligibility for FEMA assistance.
·
Rebuild with disaster prevention in mind. Before starting any
repairs or reconstruction, check with local building officials
on required permits and inspections. If you were displaced
from your home and incurred hotel or motel expenses, save your
receipts and check with FEMA on possible reimbursement.

Barrows
Attains 100% Rating with Citizens For Limited Taxation |
|
BOSTON—
State Rep. Jay Barrows was recently recognized by Citizens for
Limited Taxation with a 100% rating for voting against a number
of initiatives during the 2009 session that would have
negatively impacted taxpayers across the Commonwealth.
"When
I was first elected in 2006 I took a pledge to not increase
taxes and I meant it. I could not in good conscience vote to
raise taxes this session, especially in this economic
climate," Barrows said. "Too many families and
businesses alike are struggling everyday just to make ends meet;
increasing the daily cost has only increased the burden in each
household across the state." |
|
The
rating was based on several votes including establishing
requirements for a two-thirds vote for any tax increase, a roll
call vote on a toll hike, independent audits of House finances,
restricting state pensions, a state hiring freeze, and the
implementation of placing a sales tax on alcohol. Also included
in the rating were the votes to eliminate Bunker Hill and
Evacuation Day holidays and the vote to increase the sales tax
to 6.25% which Citizens for Limited Taxation considered to be
"bad." |

Noise
Complaint Leads to Underage Drinking Arrests |
|
On Sunday March 7,
2010, at 12:16 AM, Norton Police were dispatched to 110 West
Main Street, for a noise complaint arising from an ongoing
party. 110 West Main St is comprised of a series of five
conjoined condominiums primarily occupied and rented by students
of Wheaton College. |
|

|
On several
previous occasions over this school year, Norton Police have
responded to similar noise complaints arising from student
parties. Past incidents have resulted in verbal warnings, summons
to court and counseling by Wheaton College Staff. On this night,
the reporting individual stated that many youths were in the
parking lot making a great deal of noise and could be seen
drinking alcohol. |
|
Upon arrival, officers
observed approximately 25 individuals in the parking lot. Many of
the individuals appeared to be under the age of 21. As the
officers arrived many of the students scattered into various condo
units. Officers found that Unit 3 appeared to be hosting the
largest gathering. Officers reported seeing over fifty individuals
in the basement. Attleboro Police were called for assistance. Beer
cans and bottles of liquor were visible throughout the condo.
Despite repeated attempts, the individuals refused to open the
door for investigating officers. Officers observed one subject who
appeared to be passed out in a chair in the living room. Officers
then made entry into the unit. That subject was evaluated and
later released. Officers then began investigating the other
individuals. |
|
Ten males and seven
females were found to be under the age of 21 and were subsequently
placed under arrest for being minors in possession of alcohol. All
individuals are Wheaton College Students.

2010 Pioneer
Institute - Better Government Competition |
|
State
Representative Elizabeth "Betty" Poirier (R-North
Attleborough) would like to announce that the Pioneer Institute
for Public Policy Research is sponsoring their 19th
annual ‘Better Government Competition’.
The
Pioneer Institute, a non-profit public policy research group, is
seeking ideas from individuals about how to improve government
efficiency and effectiveness. This contest is open to any
individual who is interested in the involvement and development
of government policy. Pioneer Institute states,
"Implementation of winning ideas, from previous
competitions, has saved taxpayers more than $500 million." |
|

|
This
year’s theme is ‘Governing in Times of Crisis’ and its
focus is budget management and savings. Pioneer is seeking
innovative ideas for reform that would lessen the strain on
state and local budgets by reengineering or outsourcing existing
programs, implementing new policies with minimal or non-existent
incremental costs, eliminating non-core or duplicative programs
or creating durable mechanisms to avoid future fiscal crisis. |
|
In
order to improve the efficiency of state and local budgets and
strengthen our economy for both businesses and individuals,
Pioneer needs the involvement of concerned Massachusetts
citizens. Entries may describe proven programs that have been
recently implemented, or innovations not yet undertaken. The
Pioneer Institute encourages entries that will enhance state,
county and municipal government operations.
The
winner will receive a $10,000 prize presented at the BGC Awards
Dinner in June 2010 and runners-up will each receive a $1,000
prize for their proposals to improve government.
"I
believe that this is a great way for our citizens to become
involved in our government and how it works as well as sharing
their ideas on how they believe that our government can become
more efficient. I encourage all citizens to participate,"
stated Representative Poirier.
If
you would like to participate or require more information, you
may log onto: www.pioneerinstitute.org/bgc

Letter
for Scott Brown - US Senate |
| Dear Friends,
On January 19, 2010, we all have a tremendous responsibility
to vote and elect our new Junior Senator from our Commonwealth
of Massachusetts.
I will be enthusiastically casting my vote for Senator Scott
Brown and urge you to do the same.
Scott and I have worked together to fight waste,
mismanagement and outright corruption that we have found so
prevalent in our years on Beacon Hill. Scott will continue this
battle in Washington and will provide a voice of fiscal
discipline as the 60th vote in the United States
Senate. We need to bring balance and sanity back to our
government.
Remember, you can cast an Absentee Ballot prior to the
election if you fear that you will not be able to get to the
polls on the 19th.
Your vote is extremely important. Do not allow this
opportunity to slip away.
Sincerely,

ELIZABETH POIRIER
State Representative |
