Letter
for Scott Brown - US Senate |
| Dear Friends,
On January 19, 2010, we all have a tremendous responsibility
to vote and elect our new Junior Senator from our Commonwealth
of Massachusetts.
I will be enthusiastically casting my vote for Senator Scott
Brown and urge you to do the same.
Scott and I have worked together to fight waste,
mismanagement and outright corruption that we have found so
prevalent in our years on Beacon Hill. Scott will continue this
battle in Washington and will provide a voice of fiscal
discipline as the 60th vote in the United States
Senate. We need to bring balance and sanity back to our
government.
Remember, you can cast an Absentee Ballot prior to the
election if you fear that you will not be able to get to the
polls on the 19th.
Your vote is extremely important. Do not allow this
opportunity to slip away.
Sincerely,

ELIZABETH POIRIER
State Representative |

Sarah
Lee Guthrie Brings Family Legacy to Two Area Concerts on January
16 |
|
Sarah
Lee Guthrie, granddaughter of Woody Guthrie and Arlo's daughter,
will make concert appearances in Norton and Mansfield on
Saturday, January 16, along with her husband Johnny Irion. At
both concerts, donations of new and gently-worn winter clothing
will be accepted and donated to area shelters and goodwill
agencies.
At
8:00 pm in the evening, the couple will be the featured
performers at Mansfield's Rose Garden Coffeehouse. Earlier in
the day, from 1:30 - 3:00 pm, they will offer a special
Cocoahouse Concert for children and their families at The
Children's Studio, 184 West Main Street, in Norton. This
performance will highlight songs from their brand-new children's
album "Go Waggaloo!" on Smithsonian/Folkways Records. |
|
Sarah
Lee Guthrie comes by her musical abilities naturally. As part of
the current generation of America's foremost musical family,
Sarah Lee and her husband Johnny Irion perform a combination of
their own uniquely American songs mixed in with songs from her
legendary grandfather, Woody Guthrie. Their sound has been
compared to that of The Carter Family and the duet singing of
Johnny Cash and June Carter or Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris,
but they bring a modern and youthful exuberance to their music
and performance.
Sarah
Lee was two years old when she made her singing debut as part of
a children’s chorus on Arlo’s 1981 album, "Power of
Love," but she had little subsequent interest in making
music herself, although she was surrounded by it. After
graduating from high school in 1997, Sarah Lee |

Sarah Lee
Guthrie and Johnny Irion will be appearing in the area on
January 16. Their two daughters, Olivia and Sophie, are constant
traveling companions of the couple as they criss-cross the
country on concert dates. |
|
agreed
to tour-manage her father, who was emceeing the Further
Festival, on which members of the Grateful Dead were joined by
the Black Crowes. It was at that point she knew music was in her
future and was encouraged by her mother to forget higher
education and join her father on tour.
Johnny
Irion came out of the vibrant Carolina indie-rock scene of the
early ’90s and first met up with Sarah Lee at a club in
Los Angeles. Their relationship was musical as well as romantic,
although tentatively so at first. Johnny provided melodies for
Sarah Lee’s Dylan-influenced poetry and played guitar while
she sang. One night in his Santa Monica apartment, he handed
Sarah Lee an acoustic guitar and taught her a couple of basic
chords. As she strummed, he started playing licks over the top,
“so that it sounded kinda good, for like a second,” Sarah
Lee recalls.
Noticing
a growing smile on her face as she plucked the strings, Johnny
turned to her and said, “It’s fun, huh?” Johnny’s words
echoed in her head for days afterward. “I thought, ‘Gosh, it
is fun,’” she remembers. “I’d never known that side of
it; music was like a business to me.” It was then that Sarah
Lee realized she’d discovered her true calling. The two
married in 1999 and have two young daughters who travel with
them constantly and occasionally take part in some of the shows.
The
Saturday afternoon Cocoahouse Concert event offers free cocoa
and cookies and a chance to hear the live versions of songs
recorded for the new Smithsonian/Folkways release "Go
Waggaloo!" The album features three songs with Woody
Guthrie lyrics never before put to music and seven original
songs written by Sarah Lee and family. The arrangements blend
traditional folk music with contemporary lyrics and
instrumentation. Among the surprises on "Go Waggaloo!"
are a scratching drum machine, songs about Xboxes and DVDs, and
a spur-of-the-moment song recorded on a cell phone by the
Guthrie family on a road trip.
Tickets
for the Cocoahouse Concert at The Children's Studio in Norton
are nominally priced to encourage family participation. For
ticket information, visit www.appleheart.net
or e-mail info@appleheart.net.
The Rose Garden Coffeehouse event will be held in The
Congregational Church, 17 West Street in Mansfield, with doors
opening at 7:30 pm for the 8:00 pm feature performance. This will
be the full nationally-touring show presented by Sarah Lee
Guthrie and Johnny Irion. $15 tickets will be available when
doors open or can be reserved in advance online at www.rosegardenfolk.com.
The
Rose Garden is in its 21st year of providing a listening room
for some of the finest touring folk and acoustic musicians in
the United States and Canada. Coffee, tea, and cold drinks are
served along with a wide assortment of home-baked dessert items.
The Rose Garden is both alcohol- and smoke-free and is
wheelchair-accessible. Complete information on this and all
upcoming Rose Garden performances is available by calling
508-699-8122 or by visiting the website at www.rosegardenfolk.com.
Attendees
at both events are urged to help Golden Key International Honour
Society, a student organization at UMass Boston, provide comfort
and warmth to those in need. The group is sponsoring a winter
clothing drive and will be collecting new and gently-worn coats,
sweaters, scarves, hats, gloves and other warm clothing items
for donation to various shelters and goodwill agencies in the
Greater Boston area. |

David
Francey Brings His Songs and Stories
from Canada to the Rose Garden |
|
October
15, 2009 - Mansfield, MA - His Scottish roots are evident, but
his songs trace the landscape, history, and people of his
adopted country... Canada. He’s a singer and storyteller whose
songs of the St. Laurence Seaway, farms, rail lines, and a
hardscrabble life are intensely moving. As a result, David
Francey has won three Juno Awards... the Canadian equivalent of
the American Grammy's. |
|

David Francey
|
Francey
will be making his first-ever appearance at Mansfield's Rose
Garden Coffeehouse on Saturday, October 17. Doors will open at
7:30 pm for the 8:00 pm concert. Appearing with Francey and also
serving as his accompanist will be Craig Werth, a New Hampshire
writer and musician who sings of Newfoundland, whales, and, as
he says, "other natural wonders."
David
Francey was born in 1954 in Ayrshire, Scotland, where as a paper
boy he got his first taste of the working life. He learned to
read at an early age, and by age eleven was devouring the
newspapers he delivered. This helped establish his interest in
politics and world events while developing the social conscience
that forms the backdrop of his songs.
He
was twelve when his family immigrated to Toronto. He says he can
trace his love of the land, the history, and the people of his
adopted country to weekend family drives exploring southern
Ontario. Music played a large part in these family outings. They
sang traditional Scottish tunes as they drove through the
Canadian countryside. Dad and sister Muriel sang melody, while
mother and David sang harmonies.
His
love for Canada grew with travel. He hitched across the country
three times, then thumbed his way to the Yukon. This attachment
surfaces in his songs of factory life, farms, the St. Lawrence
Seaway, and eking out a living. He grew to understand the people
while working in Toronto train yards, the Yukon bush, and as a
carpenter in the Eastern Townships. |
|
These
experiences color his first CD, "Torn Screen Door,"
with songs like "Hard Steel Mill," "Gypsy
Boys," and "Working Poor" and his second,
"Far End of Summer," with "Highway,"
"Flowers of Saskatchewan," and "February Morning
Drive." His most recent of 8 albums, "Right of
Passage," won a 2008 Juno Award.
Craig
Werth will open for Francey and accompany him on several
instruments. Since October 2006, Werth has served as the
accompanist/co-arranger for Francey and produced his
award-winning "Right of Passage" album. |
|
The
Rose Garden Coffeehouse is held at The Congregation Church, 17

Barrowsville
Pond Water Chestnut Removal Project |
|
October
5, 2009 - Norton, MA - The Norton Conservation Commission and
the Norton Open Space Committee would like to thank the
following volunteers for participating in the Barrowsville Pond
Water Chestnut Removal Project. The project is listed as a
priority project for the Open Space Committee and is in the
second year. Barrowsville Pond is infested with the exotic,
invasive plant known as water chestnut (Trapa natans). It is the
only known location in Norton and could spread to other ponds if
left untreated. Water chestnut is an annual plant which means
volunteers can really make a difference in removing the plants
from the pond simply by pulling them out of the water before it
produces a seed. The Open Space Committee obtained a wetland
permit to perform the work and is following the Water Chestnut
Removal Plan on file in the Conservation Office. Please contact
Conservation Agent, Jennifer Carlino, for more information.
Frequently,
we hear "someone should do something about this
(problem)" and the following is a list of volunteers who
have done something to make Norton a better place. We appreciate
the efforts of the following, the scouts from Troop 12:
Joseph Cocogenitti, Tom Flett, Ben Gershman, John Keay,
Matthew Levine, Chris Litchfield, Matt Litchfield, Peter
Mazzaferro, Nick Pickett, Dan Ruff, Assistant Scout Masters: Pat
Carr, Mark Gershman, Ken Keay, Allan Litchfield, Gene
Mazzaferro, Scott Pickett, Troop 61 for use of the canoes and
equipment, Greg Guimond, Bryan Beattie and Kathy Lestan of B
& B Lanscaping, Jason Dorrence of Dorrence Recycling for the
dumpster, Keith Silver for composting the chestnut at the Hill
Street Landfill, Tom Wineman, Scott Allen, Brad McKeen, and Open
Space Committee members: Jim Hendrickson, Joan Guerrero, Michele
Simoneaux. We are not always able to get all the volunteers
names so if we have accidentally omitted someone, we apologize
and certainly appreciate your participation! Anyone interested

|
September
28, 2009 - Norton, MA - The social networking site Face Book has
a new role; it is being used as a venue for planning a local
high school reunion. A group of Norton High School alumni who
connected as a result of joining the hip website are arranging a
reunion party this upcoming October 9-10 weekend.
Graduates
and Faculty from "All Years" of the local school are
invited to attend. The unique aspect of this modern party
planning is that the details are being arranged in cyberspace.

|

|

reunion weekend will include a Norton High School Football game
against Hopkinton, DJ, slideshow, with festivities kicking off
at 5pm on Friday 9 Oct, and a bonfire on Saturday 10 Oct..
Reunion organizer Phil Sicard, class of 1984 explains, "Facebook
was a revelation. I'm now joking, and reminiscing with friends I
haven't seen or heard from in 25 years. Facebook has been a
fantastic facilitator and tool for real time, shared, reunion
planning. None of this could have happened though, without
support from the Norton School System. Superintendent Ansay and
Principal Dewar have gone above and beyond in their tremendous
facility and planning assistance for the reunion." |
|
A
small donation of $25 for each alumnus will cover food expenses
for the Norton High gymnasium event that is being arranged in
conjunction with the football game. The menu has been planned to
include appetizers, clam chowder, chicken pasta, veggie wraps,
fruit salad and dessert. The bonfire is planned at a private
residence. This event will be a bring your own lawn chair, food,
and beverage. There will be plenty of off-street parking
available. Alumni and their families are invited to arrive
around 3pm.

weekend. Members of Face Book can find out more about the event
by "friending" Norton

submit candid high school photos to the FB location. Interested

Mass
House GOP Caucus Announces
New Political Initiative and Website |
|
September
18, 2009 - Massachusetts House Republican Leader Bradley H. Jones, Jr. (R-North Reading) is pleased to announce the launching of the House Republican Caucus' political website,
MassHouseGOP.com. The website is aimed to give the caucus a political voice on the web, to help grow the caucus, and inform voters there is hope from one party rule, domination and corruption of our state government.
The site features the Phoenix Initiative which is an effort to help the Mass Republican House PAC and House GOP candidates in the November 2010 election. The symbol was carefully chosen as a sign of a rebirth and hope during these dark and dire times for the Commonwealth and from the abuse of the process by the overwhelming Democratic Majority in the state legislature. More than ever the citizens of Massachusetts need the Republicans to rise up from the ashes and provide a stronger two party system of checks and balances at the State House.
Leader Jones said,
"MassHouseGOP.com and the Phoenix Initiative is an unprecedented move by our caucus. We are in an unprecedented situation in unprecedented times and we need to step up our efforts to make the case to voters in 2010 that positive change will only happen if more Republicans are elected to the House of Representatives. Our backs are against the wall and the abuse and arrogance of one party domination of the state legislature has only brought corruption and abuse to our legislative
process.
Leader Jones along with Representative Paul K. Frost (R-Auburn) worked extensively on the creation of the website and initiative project. "We owe it to the people of this state regardless of their political affiliation to fight as hard as we can to elect more Republicans. The Democrats in the House have continually shown they are not responsible with the overwhelming power they wield. We are the party which offers hope for good government, a strong economic recovery, and fiscal responsibility." said Frost.
Brent Andersen, Republican State Committeeman and Treasurer of the Mass Republican Party along with Rob Eno and Michael Rossettie of the Red Mass Group were given an advanced viewing of the site. "When I saw this new site, I was thrilled by the potential it will have in electing more Republicans to the House," said Andersen. Eno, owner and operator of
RedMassGroup.com commented, "This is very exciting to see the House Republicans pushing back hard and joining us in full force in this important battle on the internet." Rossettie, Editor of the Red Mass Group added, "I love the Phoenix Initiative. This is a creative way to rally support for this just cause and the symbolism is right on the money. They did a great job in putting this together."
The site features all 16 House Republican members and will also list House GOP candidates for 2010. There is an online donation feature to help the Mass Republican House PAC and the site will be used to hook up candidates with volunteers. The site will be also used to help inform the general public on the need for Two Party checks and balances. Headlines for the House Republican Blog, the Capitol View Live, will be updated in real time on the site.

famous celebrities such as Jim Carey, Bruce Willis, Beyonce,
Miley Cirus and others. Patire's 30 years of personal safety
expertise contributed to his real life, down to earth
presentation of experiences both in and outside of the school
setting. BullyGuard® is based on a "Don’t Talk
Walk" tactic that encourages students to avoid
confrontations by not engaging. |
