Norton Reps.
Offer Hope for Norton Library |
|
May
11, 2009- Norton, MA - Representative Steve D’Amico
(D-Seekonk) announced House approval of an amendment he filed to
the state budget that would provide a track for the Norton
Public Library to receive limited re-certification from the
Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners by early fall. The
amendment, along with the budget is now before the Senate. |
|
The
state board decertified the library earlier this year because
the Town cut its share of the library budget by far more than
other departments. With decertification, Norton residents lose
the right to borrow books through the inter-library loan system.
The
amendment to the House budget would give the Massachusetts Board
of Library Commissioners the authority to grant a temporary
waiver by the end of August if the Town increases funding above
the current low level and comes into compliance with the
requirement that the library be open at least 40 hours/week. |

|
|
Normally,
Norton would not be eligible for reconsideration of
certification until February of 2011. The budget amendment
submitted by Representative Steven D’Amico and cosponsored by
Representatives Betty Poirier and Jay Barrows offers hope that
residents might soon be able to rejoin the inter-library loan
system. |

Compost
Helps Plants Survive Droughts
Town of
Norton Offers Reduced-Cost Composting Bins |
|
May
5, 2009 - Norton, MA - There are many good reasons to compost,
but many people don’t realize that compost helps hold moisture
in the soil, which can make the difference between life and
death to plants during drought conditions. Your trash can be
reduced by as much as 50 percent by composting your leaves,
grass clippings, garden debris, fruit peels, vegetable scraps,
tea bags, coffee grounds, egg shells, paper towels, napkins and
even paper bags. It’s easy to make compost, and the Town of
Norton makes it even easier by offering rodent-resistant home
composting bins for $25.00, over 50% off the retail price. This
special offer is made possible through a grant from the
Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection. To obtain
a discounted compost bin, just stop by the Board of Health to
pick up yours. Act now, supplies are limited! |
|
The
New Age Composter is adjustable and has a capacity of 24 cubic
feet, the equivalent of about 12 bags of leaves. It has a cone
shaped floor and cover which provide air and moisture to the
composting material, requiring a minimum of maintenance while
producing compost in about 3 months. It is made in Massachusetts
from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic.
The
compost bins help hold in heat and moisture, keep animals out,
and look more attractive than open compost heaps. Organic
material will start to turn to compost in the bins in 3 to 6
months. Compost, known as "black gold" to gardeners,
replenishes nutrients in the soil, helps retain moisture, makes
the soil easy to work, and helps plants resist disease. Compost
makes plants healthy so they can overcome adverse conditions
without pesticides or chemical fertilizers. |

|
|
Leaves
are an important ingredient of a compost pile. Without them, a
compost pile may become too wet and create odors. If you have
leaves available, use them to start your compost heap and save
the rest to add during the summer. Compostable food scraps and
grass clippings should be buried under about 6" of leaves,
where they will decompose odorless. If leaves are in short
supply, add plenty of paper towels, napkins and torn up paper
bags to provide the necessary carbon, and always bury your food
scraps under this material.
Composting
brochures are available at the Board of Health, and there are a
number of books available at the Norton library on home
composting. |
