Norton Reps. Offer Hope for Norton Library

May 11, 2009- Norton, MA - Representative Steve D’Amico (D-Seekonk) announced House approval of an amendment he filed to the state budget that would provide a track for the Norton Public Library to receive limited re-certification from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners by early fall. The amendment, along with the budget is now before the Senate.

The state board decertified the library earlier this year because the Town cut its share of the library budget by far more than other departments. With decertification, Norton residents lose the right to borrow books through the inter-library loan system.

The amendment to the House budget would give the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners the authority to grant a temporary waiver by the end of August if the Town increases funding above the current low level and comes into compliance with the requirement that the library be open at least 40 hours/week.

Normally, Norton would not be eligible for reconsideration of certification until February of 2011. The budget amendment submitted by Representative Steven D’Amico and cosponsored by Representatives Betty Poirier and Jay Barrows offers hope that residents might soon be able to rejoin the inter-library loan system.

Tim Horan

Drew Schaffer
Honorees must follow a certain criteria to qualify, including having a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or better upon completion of the 2008 fall semester and participating on the varsity team for the entire season.

While appearing in every game for the Lyons , Horan tallied six goals and four assists out of the midfield. During the Pilgrim League Tournament semifinals against Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Horan recorded one goal, two assists and three ground balls. Nearing the end of his third year at Wheaton , he has 26 career goals and 30 assists. Horan also drew academic all-league honors last season as a sophomore.

Schaffer is second on the team in assists (15), and he has provided three goals and nine helpers during man-up situations for the nation's eighth-best man-up offense. The midfielder has seen time in every game while tallying at least one point in a dozen contests, including multiple points in 10 games. A previous academic all-conference qualifier during his freshman season, Schaffer is eighth in program history in career assists (44).

A midfielder, Buongiorno has seen action in three contests, each of which was a Pilgrim game. One of 18 underclassmen on a young team, he fired off one shot in each contest he played. Buongiorno also qualified for an academic all-conference laurel as a freshman.

Compost Helps Plants Survive Droughts
Town of Norton Offers Reduced-Cost Composting Bins

May 5, 2009 - Norton, MA - There are many good reasons to compost, but many people don’t realize that compost helps hold moisture in the soil, which can make the difference between life and death to plants during drought conditions. Your trash can be reduced by as much as 50 percent by composting your leaves, grass clippings, garden debris, fruit peels, vegetable scraps, tea bags, coffee grounds, egg shells, paper towels, napkins and even paper bags. It’s easy to make compost, and the Town of Norton makes it even easier by offering rodent-resistant home composting bins for $25.00, over 50% off the retail price. This special offer is made possible through a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection. To obtain a discounted compost bin, just stop by the Board of Health to pick up yours. Act now, supplies are limited!

The New Age Composter is adjustable and has a capacity of 24 cubic feet, the equivalent of about 12 bags of leaves. It has a cone shaped floor and cover which provide air and moisture to the composting material, requiring a minimum of maintenance while producing compost in about 3 months. It is made in Massachusetts from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic.

The compost bins help hold in heat and moisture, keep animals out, and look more attractive than open compost heaps. Organic material will start to turn to compost in the bins in 3 to 6 months. Compost, known as "black gold" to gardeners, replenishes nutrients in the soil, helps retain moisture, makes the soil easy to work, and helps plants resist disease. Compost makes plants healthy so they can overcome adverse conditions without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Leaves are an important ingredient of a compost pile. Without them, a compost pile may become too wet and create odors. If you have leaves available, use them to start your compost heap and save the rest to add during the summer. Compostable food scraps and grass clippings should be buried under about 6" of leaves, where they will decompose odorless. If leaves are in short supply, add plenty of paper towels, napkins and torn up paper bags to provide the necessary carbon, and always bury your food scraps under this material.

Composting brochures are available at the Board of Health, and there are a number of books available at the Norton library on home composting.

May 5, 2009 - WORCESTER, MA- Wheaton College softball senior Stacey Kelleher (Brockton, MA/Brockton) picked up New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) all-league honors for the third consecutive season during last Tuesday's postseason meeting at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI).

Wheaton's Stacey Kelleher

Voted to the second squad for the second time in her career, Kelleher earned a first-team nod as a junior.  As Wheaton's cleanup hitter in all but one game, Kelleher is second in the league in batting average (.413) and on-base percentage (.484), fourth in slugging percentage (.624), tied for fourth in doubles (11), tied for fifth in times hit by a pitch (4), sixth in total bases (68), tied for sixth in home runs (4), tied for seventh in hits (45), tied for eighth in runs (26) and tied for 10th in RBI (22).

The converted shortstop played every inning at first base during her first full season as a position player, leading the conference in double plays turned (10) while placing third in total chances (264) and putouts (241).  Kelleher batted .438 with runners in scoring position and finished with 12 multi-hit games.

During league play, she was first in the NEWMAC in double plays turned (7), tied for second in putouts (115), third in batting average (.400), on-base percentage (.471) and total chances (125), fourth in slugging percentage (.578), tied for fourth in doubles (5), tied for fifth in times hit by a pitch (2), tied for ninth in total bases (26) and tied for 10th in hits (18).

In addition to being a three-time all-conference honoree, Kelleher was lauded with a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America award in 2008 and all-region accolades following two different seasons.  She was also named an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) All-Star as a sophomore.

Wheaton finished 2009 with a 15-23 record, having gone 6-10 in the conference while narrowly missing out on the league tournament. Tied with Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) for sixth for a tournament that accepts six teams, the Lyons and Engineers were forced into a coin flip after all other tiebreaker scenarios were exhausted.

Wheaton's Mickey Jusme Recognized as NEWMAC Field Athlete of the Year

May 1, 2009 - Worcester, MA - Wheaton College women's track & field freshman Mickey Jusme (Providence, RI/Classical) was named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Field Athlete of the Year on Tuesday during the league's postseason meeting at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), as the new honor was bestowed for the first time.

Jusme is the seventh Lyon to draw a league athlete-of-the-year accolade, becoming the first Wheaton freshman to do so and just the third underclassman to turn the feat. A Lyon has nabbed an athlete-of-the-year award each of the past six seasons, as an honor that previously went to the top competitor is now received by the top athletes in each the field and on the track.

During Saturday's NEWMAC Championship at Mount Holyoke College , Jusme twice recorded NCAA Championship provisional qualifying marks, including launching herself 39' 3 3/4" in the triple jump. The distance provided her with a victory and broke a nine-year-old meet record. Jusme also took second in the long jump with a provisional distance of 17' 11 1/2".

Wheaton College's Mickey Jusme

Jusme helped the Lyons take third at the championship, coming within 20 points of second place. Wheaton 's teams return to action on Saturday, as they compete at the NCAA Division III New England Championship at Springfield College beginning at 10:00 a.m.
