Norton Pop
Warner Week 5 Round Up |
|
October
8, 2009 - Norton, MA - Norton Pop Warner Week 5 highlights.
E
Team
McKinley
Kearsley ran for 123 yards and two touchdowns on Sunday, the
second one to put Norton up 24-19 with 1:33 left on the clock. Not
to be out-done Shamus Cochrane scored two touchdowns of his own on
5 carries for 105 yards. In a nail biting game, that went back and
forth, Norton won its second game in a row, 25-19 at Hayward Field
in Attleboro. The Lancers made tough defensive stops all day led
by their strong defensive line of Trent "Bulldog"
George (1 tackle) , Troy Butler (6 tackles, 1`sack), Michael
McNichols (4 tackles), James Precourt (4 tackles), and Conor
Gilbert (3 tackles). The lead went back and forth until Norton
scored with five minutes left in the game to go up 18-12. But the
Bombardiers scored on their first possession to go up 19-18. That
is when the Lancers went on their methodical 60-yard drive drive
to go up 25-19 and eat up 3 1/2 minutes. When the Bombardiers got
the ball back they had 60 yards to go and only 1minute and 30
seconds to do it in. That is when the Lancers swarmed to the ball
and smothered Attleboro. The Bombardiers were unable to move
the ball and Sean McNichols (3 tackles) made a game-saving tackle
on fourth down to preserve the win. The Lancers, now 2-3 on the
season, play Brockton next Sunday.
D
Team
For
forty eight minutes this was a classic defensive battle,
with the Norton and Attleboro D teams ending in regulation
at zero-zero. The drama unfolded in overtime. Norton had first
possession trying to punch it in from the ten yard line; Attleboro
defense stepped up and stopped Norton from scoring. Next it was
Attleboro's turn to try and score, and Norton's D was up to the
challenge, and shut them down on four tries. Attleboro offense
took the ball again to try and end it, and again Norton's strong
defense would not yield.
Finally
the Norton offense clicked with quarterback Tyler Troiano hitting
Camden Cleathero on a quick slant for the first and only touchdown
of the game. Jack Mulvehill finished the scoring powering in the
extra point. Attleboro had one last chance to even the score, but
the Norton D would not be denied their second consecutive shutout.
his was a great example of a team victory. The Norton D team has
24 players on their roster and everyone contributed to today’s
victory. Norton D team would like to thank the Attleboro D team
and Attleboro Pop Warner for allowing us to host a home game at
their field, a show of true sportsmanship. Norton's next game is
against Brockton next Sunday in Norton
C
Team
The
Norton C Lancers got back into the win column with a 12-0 victory
against Attleboro. Defense ruled in the first half with both teams
holding each other scoreless. Highlights for Norton included
interceptions by Spencer Sweiger and Ty Cabrara. Strong defensive
performances were also turned in by Lucas Kane, John Hunter and
Jimmy Howe. The powerful Norton offense was held in check until
the first drive of the second half which saw Norton drive quickly
up the field culminating in a 30 yard scoring pass from Jonathan
Levy to Spencer Sweiger. Norton recovered an Attleboro fumble on
the subsequent kickoff and proceeded to begin a slow and
methodical drive which took most of the remaining game time and
ended with a Justin Ireland catch of a Wayne Belcher touchdown
pass in the back corner of the end zone. Attleboro blocked the
extra point attempt but failed to garner any momentum as Norton’s
defense shut the door hard on Attleboro’s final drive. Norton’s
C Lancers have a monumental challenge next week as our division
foe Brockton comes to visit. This will be a tough match-up with
surefire playoff implications. |

Warner Week 3 Round Up |
|
September
24, 2009 - Norton D Team lost a hard fought battle to the
Cowboys of Hyde Park 19-13. Norton scored first with Camden
Cleathero taking it into the end zone on a first quarter run. The
extra point was successful with Ben Combs rumbling in. Hyde Park
came back quickly with a score of their own. Norton denied the
extra point. The next few minutes were a whirlwind of scoring with
Norton running back Camden Cleathero returning a 94 yd. kickoff
return behind great blocking by Jack Mulvehill and the rest of the
return team. The extra point was unsuccessful. Hyde Park answered
with their own kickoff return, and they converted the extra point
to tie the game at 13. The defense stepped up for both sides as
the half winded down. Just before the half the Cowboys broke off a
long touchdown run for a 19-13 lead at the half. The second half
was a defensive battle, with Norton cornerback Jonathan Briggs
picking off one pass and coming up with a big stop on third down.
The linebacker crew of Jack Mulvehill, Ben Combs and Tyler Troiano
also held Hyde Park scoreless in the second half. Norton had
several chances to even the score in the second half, but came up
just short. Jay Allen came up with a big fumble recovery late in
the game to give Norton one final chance. A last second pass was
unsuccessful to end the game. The coaching staff was very proud of
a good team effort, and we look forward to our first home game
next Sunday again
The
Lancer E Team, on the road for the third consecutive week,
lost to the Hyde Park Cowboys 20-7 at Kelly Field. Norton found
itself in a hole early, as the Cowboys scored on their first
offensive snap to go up 6-0. The Lancers stepped up on their next
defensive series, led by a Colin Faherty sack for a loss of 12
yards. The Cowboys were held without a first down on their next
three possessions. With only 2 minutes left in the first half,
Hyde Park scored on an 80-yard td run to go up 13-0. The Cowboys
opened up the second half with another long touchdown run to go up
20-0. The Lancers offense got on the board on their next
possession. Led by the blocking of tight end Connor Gilbert
and fullback Colin Faherty, tailback Shamus Cochrane ( 9
carries-94 yards) carried the ball up the right side for a 25-yard
touchdown run. Colin Faherty capped the drive with the one point
conversion. The Lancer defense shut down the Cowboys the rest of
the day. Coming up big and playing with reckless abandon was Liam
Connaugten , who finished with an interception and three tackles.
Also stepping up for Norton were Joey Juliano ( 2 tackles, fumble
recovery) , James Precourt ( 4 tackles) and Conor Gilbert (3
tackles). The Lancers have their home opener against Plymouth on
Sunday.
The
C Team entered the Hyde Park game as an undefeated team
flying high with a 2-0 record. The Hyde Park team was not
intimidated and squeaked out an overtime win after a hard fought
battle 19-13. The Lancers broke out on top and the Cowboy’s of
Hyde Park battled back to tie the game at 7 shortly before half
time. Key performances were turned in by the special teams unit as
Norton recovered an onside kick by Matt Bukowski. Offensively
Norton moved the ball behind solid line play from Lucas Kane, John
Hunter and Anthony Fiorillo. Defensively Norton was stout getting
key stops from Justin Ireland, Jimmy Howe and Cam Zanoni. The
second half opened with an exchange of solid defensive stops
between Norton and Hyde Park. Early in the fourth quarter, Norton
overcame some injuries and appeared to take control of the game
with a score by Shinn Furukawa. Norton’s defense stopped Hyde
Park and things looked good for the hometown boys. However on
Norton’s next offensive series an extra effort lead to a
turnover and Hyde Park converted the opportunity into a tying
score and subsequent overtime victory. Norton has little time to
dwell on the game though as arch-rival Plymouth visits next Sunday
in the much anticipated home opener. |

Warner Week 2 Round Up |
|
September
18, 2009 - The Norton E Team suffered a tough loss, 13-12
to their arch rivals, the Bellingham Falcons. The Lancers moved
the ball all day on Bellingham, gaining over 300 yards on the
ground. The offensive line led by James (JT) Simpson, Blaise
Germano, Jamison MacNaught, Conor Gilbert and Kevin Croce blew
open huge holes for the Lancers backfield. Shamus Cochrane led the
way with 10 carries for 87 yards, James Precourt with 6 carries
for 27 yards and Tyler Elliot chipped in with 2 carries for 15
yards. Norton started the scoring to go up 6-0, with a touchdown
run of 60 yards by McKinley Kearsley. The Norton defense held the
Falcons scoreless, in the first quarter, lead by the duo of
Michael McNichols , 5 tackles, and Troy Butler , 11 tackles.
McKinley Kearsley sent Norton back up `12-6, with his second
touchdown run of the day, this time a 90 yard run. The defense
stepped up big, in the second half, holding Bellingham to three
straight drives without a first down. They were led by fine
secondary play of Liam Connaughten, Joe Raneri, Colin Cochrane and
Brennan Vatalaro. The Falcons scored late to finish the scoring.
Norton
D Team evened their record at 1-1, with a 27-6 victory over
Bellingham. The scoring was led by Camden Cleathero who scored
twice, one on the ground and another through the air. Other scores
on the day came in by Ryan Mazzola who converted a great catch and
run, as well as Ben Combs who was running down hill all day. The
extra points were converted by Jack Mulvehill and Ben Combs with
two. The Defense was anchored by a strong front line of Allen,
Fistori, and Weber, with great outside contain by ends Harris,
Parker Cleathero, and Jacob Burgess. On a fourth and short for
Bellingham, Andrew Raneri came up from cornerback to stop them
short and seal the game for the lancers. Big contributors for the
D squad included Arthur O’Neil, Jake Doolan, and Trevor Pope.
Norton takes on a tough Hyde Park team next week. The coaches want
to thank all the parents for their understanding and support as we
move forward.
The
Norton C Lancers continued on a roll, with a dominating
performance against Bellingham. The result was Norton 34
Bellingham 0 which improved Norton’s 2009 record to 2-0. This
match was under control early. During Bellingham’s opening
drive, Lancer cornerback Jonathan Levy picked off a Bellingham
pass and ran it back for a touchdown. Coach Dufrense and his staff
were able to work extensively on some of the reserve units. The
team stepped up to the challenge and key performances were turned
in by Carl Valentine, Andrew Walsh-Kern and Alex Carrigan.
Offensively big contributions were received by Cam Zanoni, Ben
Bishop and Jacob Eberle. The outlook for this squad is bright as
the season as the team’s motto "One Team, One Mission"
is played out in practices and games. The road stiffens next week
as Norton travels up to Hyde Park to take on a traditionally tough
Hyde Park squad. |

Norton Pop
Warner Season Begins |
|
September
10, 2009 - The Norton Pop Warner C team started their 2009
campaign with a good deal of promise. The opening game against the
Wareham Tigers after a tough and long preseason was a long
anticipated event. That anticipation was rewarded with a spirited
effort by the Norton Boys. Coach Dufresne and his staff had
prepped the team well and that showed as the Lancers dominated the
Tigers on both sides of the ball. Defensively, Norton did not
allow a score and created several turnovers. Excellent line play
by John Cormier, Jayson Porier, Sean Fitzgerald and Jimmy Howe,
among others, was supported by excellent linebacker and backfield
support from Anthony Fiorillo, Spencer Sweiger, Timmy Goebel and
Shinn Furukawa. Offensively, Coach Dufresne had success with
multiple packages. Strong line play from John Hunter, Mike
Sheehan, Robert Moore and Matt Peterson paved the way for scores
by Jonathan Levy, Wayne Belcher and Matt Bukowski. The entire team
gets the credit for an excellent season opening victory. Final
score was Norton Lancers 25, Wareham Tigers 0.
Norton
D team lost a hard fought battle to the Wareham Tigers 12-0.
Norton had several chances in the first half to score with hard
running by Jack Mulvehill and Ben Combs, but came up just
short. The offensive line of Jacob Chapman, George McDonald,
Jay Allen, Jacob Burgess, Joe Weber, Vince Fistori, and Ryan
Mazzola did a great job opening holes. The Norton D held Wareham
scoreless in the first half, led by defensive captain Vince
Fistori. Other notable stops on defense were made by Trevor
Cintron, Keyshawn Harris, and Jonathan Briggs. The second half was
just as exciting with Wareham scoring twice. Norton played hard
until the final whistle. If not for a few bad bounces the score
could have been reversed. The coaches were proud of the effort of
all of the players and are looking forward to next weeks game
against Bellingham.
The
Norton E Team started their 2009 season with an away game against
the Wareham Tigers. The Lancers fell behind early 6-0 before
McKinley Kearsley took the ball up the left hand sideline for a
45-yard touchdown to tie the score at 6-6. Wareham came back and
scored another touchdown to go up 12-6 before the half. The Tigers
started the second half by scoring and leading 20-6 over Norton.
McKinley Kearsley scored his second touchdown of the day, this
time a 55-yard score and Liam Connaughten added the 2-point
conversion to cut the score 20-14. Wareham finished off the
scoring with another touchdown to make the final score 26-14.
Norton was led defensively by their outstanding defensive tackles
Troy Butler who had six tackles and Michael McNichols with seven
tackles. Liam Connaughten led the Lancers with 11 rushes for 79
yards. |

May 6, 2009 - Zach Ruby, Danny Rafuse, James
Keating, all of Norton, lived quite the basketball experience over
the weekend as they entered into the State Finals in AAU Basketball.
They survived the Sweet 16, Elite 8 and made
